Public transport programs

Esbjerg Municipality offers several transportation arrangements for citizens, both with and without disabilities.

The different arrangements

Transport Scheme:

Transportation with Individual Means - Social Services Act §117

Purpose:

Transportation to free physiotherapy or doctor-prescribed therapeutic horseback riding.

Not applicable for:

Transportation to the doctor.

Who can apply:

All individuals over the age of 18.

Generally, applicants must have a permanent disability that prevents the use of public transport.

Subsidy coverage includes:

For free physiotherapy or doctor-prescribed therapeutic horseback riding, assistance may be provided for up to 2 sessions per week.

A co-payment is required, equivalent to 1/3 of the approved amount.

For other transportation related to a rejection of car support, the approved amount is typically capped at 400 DKK per month.

Transport Scheme:

Disability Transport - Public Transport Company Act §11

Purpose:

Transportation for shopping, leisure activities, family visits, and similar purposes.

Who can apply:

The scheme is for individuals with mobility impairments who have been granted mobility aids under the Social Services Act §112. It also applies to blind/visually impaired individuals with vision reduced to 6/60 or less. Membership in the Danish Association of the Blind confirms this. The scheme is also available for individuals with mobility impairments caused by cancer, lung, or heart conditions.

The scheme does not apply to individuals with mental disabilities.

Subsidy coverage includes:

The cost of the trip is 4.5 DKK per km (2024).

However, there is a minimum charge of 50.00 DKK (2024) per trip.

Between 00:00 and 06:00, the fare is double, though the same minimum charge applies.

Transport Scheme:

Transport to and from the Doctor - Health Act §170

Purpose:

For Group 1 insured individuals under the health insurance scheme.

Who can apply:

Transportation must be by the most economical appropriate means and is only provided when the cost to the treatment location exceeds 48 DKK total (2024) for a pensioner.

For non-pensioners, the distance must exceed 50 km each way and cost more than 113 DKK in total (2024).

If public transport (including flexible transport options) cannot be used, transportation by private car or Esbjerg Taxi may be approved.

Private car usage is reimbursed at the state rate of 2.23 DKK per km (2024).

Transport Scheme:

Transport for People with Reduced Functionality - Social Services Act §100

Purpose:

Transportation to and from education, work, treatment, and leisure activities.

Who can apply:

Individuals aged 18 to 65 with reduced mental and physical functionality, when the additional costs are a consequence of the reduced functionality and cannot be covered by other legislation.

Subsidy coverage includes:

The subsidy is provided as a continuous, tax-free amount per month. It requires that, due to the reduced functionality, the individual has documented additional expenses exceeding 7,296 DKK annually (2024) as a result of the disability.

Transport Scheme:

Transportation in Connection with Testing Assistive Devices, Excluding the Hearing Clinic - Social Services Act §112

Purpose:

Testing of body-worn assistive devices.

Who can apply:

Anyone with a permanent disability.

Subsidy coverage includes:

Transportation is provided using the most economical, appropriate means of transport that exceeds 60 DKK, with a reduced rate of 25 DKK for individuals receiving social pension.

Transport Scheme:

Transportation for Testing Recycled Assistive Devices - Social Services Act §112

Purpose:

Testing of recycled assistive devices that cannot take place in the individual's own home.

Who can apply:

Anyone with a permanent disability and a significant need for testing.

Subsidy coverage includes:

Transportation is provided using the most economical, appropriate means of transport, which exceeds 60 DKK, with a reduced rate of 25 DKK for individuals receiving social pension.

Transport Scheme:

Transportation to Approved Daycare Services - Social Services Act §79

Purpose:

Transportation to approved daycare services.

Who can apply:

Individuals who have been referred to a daycare service.

Subsidy coverage includes:

Taxi expenses may be approved.

The co-payment is 47 DKK for a round trip (2024).

Application processed by:

Health & Care staff at the approved daycare service, who will initiate and adjust the subsidy as needed.

Transport Scheme:

Transportation to Rehabilitation - Social Services Act §140

Purpose:

Transportation to rehabilitation sessions.

Who can apply:

Citizens who require rehabilitation after being discharged from the hospital.

The individual's condition or residence prevents the use of public transportation.

Subsidy coverage includes:

Transportation can be applied for, with no co-payment required.

The reimbursement of transport expenses cannot exceed the actual transport costs.

Transport Scheme:

Transportation for Reasonable and Necessary Travel - Active Act §81 and §82

Purpose:

Transportation for reasonable and necessary travel that is not covered by other areas of law and that the citizen is unable to financially cover themselves.

Who can apply:

Anyone over the age of 18, except for public pensioners and early retirement pensioners who were granted pension according to rules before January 1, 2003.

Subsidy coverage includes:

Necessary expenses or part of them, assessed on a case-by-case basis, including the individual's ability to cover the costs themselves.

Transport Scheme:

Transportation for Reasonable and Necessary Travel - Pension Act §14 and Early Retirement Pension Act §17

Purpose:

Transportation for reasonable and necessary travel that is not covered by other areas of law and that the citizen is unable to financially cover themselves.

Who can apply:

Public pensioners and early retirement pensioners who were granted pension according to the rules before January 1, 2003.

Subsidy coverage includes:

Necessary expenses or part of them, assessed on a case-by-case basis, including the individual's ability to cover the costs themselves.

Transport Scheme:

Transportation for Rehabilitating Individuals, etc. - Employment Act §175

Purpose:

Transportation to and from offered programs.

Who can apply:

Insured unemployed individuals, rehabilitating persons, and individuals referred to flex jobs who are participating in programs under the LAB (Activation and Employment) Act.

Subsidy coverage includes:

Subsidy for transportation between the individual's residence and the location where the program is being carried out.

The citizen covers the cost of the first 24 km daily.

Transport Scheme:

Transportation for Unemployed Individuals, etc. - Employment Act §176

Purpose:

Transportation to and from offered programs.

Who can apply:

Unemployed individuals participating in programs under the LAB (Activation and Employment) Act.

Subsidy coverage includes:

Subsidy for transportation costs.

Transport Scheme:

Not Available Within Esbjerg City

Purpose:
Transportation for shopping, family visits, leisure activities, and similar purposes.

Who can use it:

Anyone can use FlexTraffic as long as they do not require special assistance from the driver.

Wheelchair users who need to remain in their wheelchair during the trip can also use FlexTraffic, as long as the only help required is assistance with getting in and out of the vehicle. The driver will assist with lifting in and out of the vehicle and securing the wheelchair. Users of rollators must be able to get in and out of the vehicle on their own.

The service is available within Esbjerg Municipality and for trips to and from neighboring municipalities (Varde, Vejen, Tønder, and Haderslev), but not for internal trips within Esbjerg city itself.

Subsidy coverage includes:

6.75 DKK per km (2024), with a minimum charge of 50 DKK per trip (2024).

Available every day of the week from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM, except on December 24th and 31st.

Must be booked at least 2 hours in advance.

No application is required for this transport scheme.

Transport Scheme:

Not Available Within Esbjerg City

Purpose:

Transportation for shopping, family visits, leisure activities, and similar purposes.

Who can use it:

Flexung - A Variant of Flextur for Young People with a Youth Card

A special version of Flextur for young people who have a valid youth card.

Subsidy coverage includes:

3.38 DKK per km (2024), with a minimum charge of 25 DKK per trip (2024).

Available every day from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM, except on December 24th and 31st.

Must be booked at least 2 hours in advance.

Application processed by:

Esbjerg Municipality, Citizen Services, Sick Leave & Social Benefits.

To enroll in the program, you must send a message to Esbjerg Municipality. You can do this via Digital Post using your MitID: Skriv til Esbjerg Kommune.

When you write to us, remember to include the following information:

Subject must be Flexung
Name
Address
CPR number
Mobile number (for both the young person and the parents with custody)
Copy of Youth Card
Copy of email receipt for paid validity period
Educational institution, if the Youth Card is for education

You will need an approval letter from us before you can use the service.

Transport Scheme:

Flexjunior can be used within Esbjerg Municipality and to and from Esbjerg city. However, the service cannot be used within Esbjerg city itself, as there is good coverage with the city buses.

Purpose:

Transportation for shopping, family visits, leisure activities, and similar purposes.

Who can use it:

A special version of Flextur for children under 16 years of age.

Travel Rules:

You can take up to 3 guests with you.
All guests pay the same price as you.
Everyone must board and disembark at the same address.
Flexjunior cannot be used for travel to neighboring municipalities.
You can bring up to 2 pieces of luggage, each weighing no more than 11 kg.
If your age or height requires the use of a car seat or booster cushion, you must bring it yourself and be able to secure it.
You must be able to manage both getting into and out of the car, just as you would on a bus.

Delays & Travel Guarantee:

If you are not picked up 15 minutes after the scheduled time, it is considered a delay. You can resolve this by calling Flextrafik at 76 608 608 and pressing 2.
If the vehicle is delayed by more than 20 minutes, you are covered by Sydtrafik's travel guarantee for Flextrafik.

Subsidy Coverage:

3.38 DKK per km (2024), with a minimum charge of 25 DKK per trip (2024).
Available every day of the week from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM, except on December 24th and 31st.

How to Order a Ride:

You can order a ride online via the self-service platform at www.sydtrafik.flextrafik.dk (in danish) or through the Flextrafik app.
You receive a 20% discount on the self-payment when you order online.
Alternatively, you can call Flextrafik at 76 608 608 any day between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

Transport arrangements not administered by Esbjerg Municipality

Transport to the hospital for treatment and examinations – administered by the Transport Office SVS, Finsensgade 35, 6700 Esbjerg.

Transport to the hospital for specialized rehabilitation – administered by Health & Care.

Transport to public hearing clinic – administered by the Transport Office SVS, Finsensgade 35, 6700 Esbjerg – tel. 70 11 31 11. No transport allowance is provided for private hearing clinics.
